Ground works for self build project west sussex

Don’t confuse ‘value’ for money with ‘lowest price’ in construction tenders!

Every client wants value for money.

But we find that “value” and “lowest price” are often confused.

One of the most important decisions in any building project is choosing the right contractor. Yet many clients focus heavily on comparing the bottom line, without considering what sits behind the number. The reality is that contractors aren’t all offering the same thing.

– Some are geared towards delivering the lowest possible cost.
– Some focus on speed and programme.
– Some prioritise craftsmanship and quality.
– Some offer a higher level of service, communication and project management.

None of these approaches are inherently right or wrong. They simply reflect different priorities.

A useful comparison is how we choose where to buy our food.
– You might shop at Aldi because price is your main consideration.
– You might choose Sainsbury’s for a balance of quality and cost.
– You might go to Waitrose because quality, service and experience matter more to you.
– Or perhaps you prefer a local farm shop, where provenance and craftsmanship justify a premium.

The same principle applies when selecting a contractor. The challenge is not finding the cheapest quote but understanding what matters most to you and whether the contractor you’ve chosen is set up to deliver it.

Because we often see clients choose a contractor based primarily on price, only to be disappointed later when the quality, communication or programme doesn’t align with their expectations.

In our experience, most building projects involve compromise. The key is making those compromises consciously rather than discovering them halfway through the build.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned when comparing contractor quotes? Or if you’re a contractor, what’s your take on this?
